What is the Scapular?
The scapular consists of two or more pieces of cloth worn over the shoulders. What is commonly referred to as “the scapular” today generally refers to the miniaturized versions of the full-length scapulars worn by members of many of the Church's great religious orders. The Benedictines, Dominicans, Franciscans, and perhaps most famously, Carmelites have worn full-sized versions of the scapular for centuries as a part of their religious habit (or uniform).
Why should I wear the scapular?
So that’s a loaded question. We could give a bunch of reasons starting with because your Mother said so!, or we could list out hundreds if not thousands of saints throughout the centuries who devoutly wore the cloth, including a number of modern ones, or we could cite numerous documented miracles associated with the scapular, not to mention a very recent one.
Instead, here, we’ll simply say this: the Blessed Virgin Mary has promised that “whoever who dies wearing the scapular will not burn in the flames of Hell.” No ifs, ands or buts. Those are her words, not ours. The Church has backed this up, affirming and reaffirming this statement throughout the centuries. So yeah, saving your soul from Hell, we think that’s the best reason to wear the scapular.
Why should you buy your scapular from WTS?
For many reasons. :) Off the top of our heads, we came up with three:
- We offer the best scapulars on earth. Period. You won’t find a higher quality, longer lasting scapular anywhere. They are handcrafted in the USA and made of 100% brown wool. We think they look pretty great too.
- Every scapular we sell comes with our Forever Replacement Promise. Our scapular will be the last scapular you ever buy (at least for yourself).
- Proceeds from the sale of every scapular go to support men and women discerning religious vocations.
Can non-Catholics wear the scapular?
Well, no one is going to stop you. But we will say this: the scapular is Catholic devotion. The graces and benefits of wearing the scapular, strictly speaking, only apply to baptized Catholics. So if you’re not Catholic, but want to wear the scapular… why not become Catholic while you’re at? You know you want to. Learn more about that here.
Will I need to get the scapular blessed?
Yes and no. When you are first enrolled in the Brown Scapular, during the ceremony, the priest or deacon blesses your scapular before placing it over your head. The Church states that this is the only scapular that needs to be blessed. This means then that if you’ve already been enrolled in the Brown Scapular, any new scapular you obtain does not need to be blessed to supply the graces and promises. However, it’s never a bad idea to get holy objects blessed. It certainly can’t do any harm, only good!
What does it mean to be “enrolled”?
If you’re going to wear the Brown Scapular and make it a part of your Catholic life (and you know you want to!) the Catholic Church asks that you get yourself enrolled. But not to worry, getting enrolled isn't complicated at all. Visit our Get Enrolled page to learn everything you need to know about enrollment in the Brown Scapular.
Isn't it superstitious to wear the scapular?
No. The Catholic Church has always strongly condemned (and always will) any and all superstitious practices as they violate the First Commandment.
The scapular has great spiritual power because the Church by its Divine authority (at the request of Our Blessed Mother) has given it this power. The scapular is an awesome channel of supernatural grace (as are the rosary and any other blessed religious items).
Why are these scapulars $30?
We think asking $30 for a scapular that we back up with our Forever Replacement Promise is a pretty good deal. :) Not to mention that proceeds from WearTheScapular.com go to support men and women discerning religious vocations.
Do you offer bulk orders?
You're welcome to order as many scapulars at a time as you’d like. Shipping is always free and we do our best to have orders shipped in less than 24 hours. However, we do not offer bulk order discounts at this time.
Are there other scapular devotions besides the Brown Scapular?
Yes. There are at least eighteen different kinds officially recognized by the Church. The oldest and most well-known of the scapular devotions is The Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (aka. the Brown Scapular). This is scapular we sell at WearTheScapular.com. However, throughout the nearly eight-hundred-year history of the pious devotion, many additional scapular traditions have developed. To learn about those, visit here.
Why do you only offer one type and size scapular?
At this early stage of WearTheScapular.com, in order to run the business effectively and ensure great customer service, we are only able to provide one kind. But we are confident that this one scapular hits a sweet spot and is perfect for all Catholics, young and old.
